Distrust

All is secular
wintry as the gas chambers.
Terrifying how common are the unspeakable moments of history

appalling injustices
make quite a compendium
war crimes

genocides
rapes

aren’t rare.
Distrust metastasizes
like appalling cancers

loathing your neighbours
leads to massacres:

whole cultures are uprooted.
It is legion.

  1. Once again, you’ve constructed a very powerful poem, Robert, one that turns a spotlight on humanity’s capacity for evil.
